Frequently Asked Questions
What type of individual sees you for therapy?
I provide therapy services to adults (18+ years). I primarily work with women struggling with stress, relationship concerns, depression, and anxiety. I also enjoy working with those who are managing job-related stress and/or career indecision.
What is therapy with you like?
I have a flexible, eclectic approach to therapy. This means that I try to tailor therapy to your needs. Different people need different things, and the same person may also need different things at different times! (Did I use the word 'different' enough for you there?!)
I use techniques from a variety of therapeutic approaches. We'll work together to figure out what's getting in your way. I look at your struggles within the larger context of your personal history, social circles, and culture. Although therapy is often about what's not working well, I always encourage clients to view their problems in new ways and get a greater appreciation for their strengths.
Most often, I begin sessions (after the first, intake session) by asking clients how they are doing and what they think would be helpful to talk about that day. If clients are unsure, I may ask them to consider their reasons for coming to therapy initially. I like to meet clients where they are and be flexible in what I offer therapeutically in each session. For example, in some sessions you may need to ‘vent’ and work on processing your emotions more deeply. In others, you may benefit most from learning about and practicing new strategies for managing difficult situations.

I strongly believe in the healing power of humor. As a result, I often intentionally incorporate humor and laughter, when appropriate, into sessions. I believe this is just as important as allowing space for more difficult, 'serious', emotions!
I really encourage clients to think about what would make therapy most helpful for them. Although I may, based on your particular needs, sometimes provide a direct recommendation for how often you have sessions, in many cases this is flexible. Very often, clients begin therapy once a week or once every other week. As they progress, sessions may be spaced out more. Therapy sessions typically last between 45-55 minutes.

What types of psychological testing/assessment do you do?

I provide testing/assessment services to adults (18+ years). I am able to conduct assessments required as part of the gestational surrogacy or adoption process. I have a special interest in career issues and may use various tests to help clients learn more about themselves during the career exploration/decision-making process.
I do not provide court-ordered assessments. I also do not do assessments for individuals under 18 years old and do not assess for learning disorders, inattention/hyperactivity issues, Autism Spectrum disorder, and intellectual disability.
How do I make a first appointment?
Contact me, Megan, by email (megan@megancallahanphdpllc.com). You can also fill out the contact form on this site. My phone number is 952-243-3749, although I am usually able to respond much faster to inquiries made via email or the contact form.
What will happen when I reach out to schedule a first appointment?
When I receive your contact, I will reach out to you to initiate a conversation about what brings you to therapy or assessment services at this time. You will generally be contacted via phone if you call and via email if you email or fill out the contact form.
You may be asked questions about your current struggles or needs, as well as about your availability for therapy or assessment and how you plan to pay for services (e.g., insurance coverage). If you choose to move forward with me, you will then be able to schedule a first appointment!
If, during these beginning conversations, I or you decide you would be better served by another provider, I will help you move forward by offering referrals. Common reasons for this decision would be presenting concerns outside of my expertise, not accepting your insurance, or schedules not matching up at the time.
How do I complete intake paperwork?

I use an online system to share intake/policy documents with clients. When you schedule your first appointment with me, you will get an email with a link to a secure portal where you can sign these policy documents and fill out a couple questionnaires about yourself. This will allow us to hit the ground running when you come in! If possible, please complete all intake paperwork at least 24 hours before your first appointment.
How does confidentiality work? Are there any limits to my confidentiality?
As a therapy or assessment client, you have the right to confidentiality. This means that, with some exceptions, I won’t share what you talk about in session with any third party. In some cases, you may choose to give me authorization to share information with someone else.
There are some situations in which I may be required, by law, to share information without your permission. For example, if I know or have a strong reason to suspect that a child or dependent/elderly adult is being abused, I must report this. I also must take action to preserve life if I have reason to believe you may be at risk of harming yourself or someone else. In these cases, I would share the minimum amount of information necessary to keep everyone safe.
What can I expect during my first appointment?
Your first therapy appointment, including all other therapy appointments, last about 45-55 minutes. Assessment sessions typically take 2-3 hours, but this will vary significantly based on your particular needs.
If you are attending a first therapy appointment, you can expect to begin by reviewing important policies. You will have the opportunity to ask questions. Then, you and I will spend some time getting to know each other and discussing your current struggles, background/history, and goals for therapy. If you decide to proceed with therapy at that time, a plan will be made for going forward (e.g., how often to meet and goals to work on).
What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
Please provide as much notice as possible for cancelling or rescheduling appointments. You can cancel or reschedule by emailing me at megan@megancallahanphdpllc.com or calling 952-243-3749.
How do I pay for sessions?
I accept some insurance plans, including BCBS, United Healthcare, and Cigna/Evernorth. I also accept private pay for clients who do not have insurance or do not wish to use their insurance. Most clients, even those with insurance, end up paying some amount for therapy (e.g., co-pay). Payment can be made via credit card, debit card, or check. Checks should be made payable to Megan Callahan, PhD, PLLC. Checks can be given to me in person or mailed to my office at 901 Twelve Oaks Center Drive, #908F, Wayzata, Minnesota 55391.
If paying with a credit card, you have the option of paying in session with me directly or via your client portal, which is set up when you make your first appointment. Generally, payment is due at time of service.
What if I have a mental health emergency or crisis?
As I am an independent clinician in private practice, I am not able to provide 24-hour crisis or after-hours coverage. Please consider this as you are deciding whether my practice is right for you. If you begin therapy with me and experience a mental health emergency or crisis, please use the resources listed below.
