Individual Therapy
Psychological Assessment
The majority of my time with clients is spent doing individual therapy. I sincerely enjoy the strong, warm therapeutic relationships I have with my clients. I work with women, ages 18 and up, who are struggling with a wide variety of life concerns. Many of my clients are learning to more effectively manage depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and stress. It is also very common for clients to struggle with self-esteem and other identity issues.
In individual therapy, you will work one-on-one with me, often meeting on an every week or every other week basis. Sessions typically last 45 to 55 minutes. I conduct therapy in person, in Wayzata, Minnesota, and via telehealth on a secure video platform. You must be in the states of Iowa or Minnesota to receive telehealth services.
Some clients find they only require the additional support of therapy for several months. Others decide they would like to make therapy a regular part of their self-care and mental health management routine and continue therapy for significantly longer. I consider it part of my job to help you figure out what approach is right for you.
Individual therapy can look a lot different from client to client and even from one session to another! Sometimes you may find it most helpful to ‘vent’ and spend some time processing difficult emotions, such as anger or guilt, more deeply. Other times, you may decide it would be best to spend the session learning about and practicing different strategies for managing stress. My approach to therapy is eclectic, although I often draw from emotion-focused, interpersonal process, and relational-cultural perspectives.
While I may be the therapist/psychologist in our relationship, I consider you an equal partner in your journey. I encourage clients to be an active part of figuring out goals and making plans for specific sessions. It is important to be able to discuss difficult or serious topics in therapy and I will be there to support you along the way as you experience and process any emotions that come up for you. However, life is not always serious and I often intentionally incorporate humor, when appropriate, into sessions. Sometimes you need to laugh!
Psychological assessment is typically done in an attempt to learn something about a person, such as a diagnosis or whether or not they are prepared for a particular circumstance, such as adoption. I provide assessment to adults, ages 18 and up, seeking clarification around potential diagnoses such as ADHD and mood disorders. I also provide assessments for those wanting to become gestational surrogates who are working with a surrogacy agency.
The assessment types discussed above usually involve testing and in-depth interviews. After completing testing and interviews, I write a comprehensive report detailing the results, noting my recommendations about the question at hand.
Assessments of this type typically take half a day to a full day. In many cases, assessment can be completed during just 1 session, although 2 or 3 is sometimes necessary. It is common for clients to be somewhat nervous when participating in assessment. However, I try my best to create a comfortable, relaxed environment in sessions and always welcome any questions clients have before, during, or after the assessment.
